A short history of the dame jeanne:
A dame jeanne, tourie or bonbonne is a large bottle most often made of glass, sometimes stoneware, protected by moss, straw or wicker woven into the wall (clissage) and used to store and transport food, beverages and other liquids (alcohols, acids, etc.). Spherical in shape, flattened at the base, they are topped by a neck about 50 mm in diameter. Their capacity ranges from 5 to 50 liters.
For oil, the dame jeanne is usually made of ceramic with handles. For wine, they are made of glass and have no handles.
Glass carboys can also be used for decorative purposes.
It's also possible to line the inside of a carboy with plants in an original way, sealing it tightly and allowing the plant to live on unhindered.
Origin
Legend has it that, driven from her kingdom of Naples, Queen Jeanne took refuge in her county of Provence in 1347, along the road from Grasse to Draguignan. Surprised by a violent storm, she was given shelter in the small castle of a glassmaker's gentleman in the hamlet of “Saint Paul la Galline Grasse”.

After spending the night there, the Queen asked to see the bottles being made. A little perturbed, the glassmaker blew into the bit of his cane, and produced an enormous bottle, admired by all for its capacity of around ten liters. He decided to start production and called it Reine-Jeanne, but the sovereign modestly suggested that it be called “dame jeanne”. To protect the large bottle, the glassmaker dressed it in wicker.
