-----------A little history of the dame jeanne: A dame jeanne, tourie or bonbonne is a large bottle, usually made of glass, sometimes stoneware, protected by moss, straw or wicker woven into the wall. They are used to store and transport food, beverages and other liquids (alcohols, acids, etc.). Spherical in shape, flattened at the base, they are topped by a neck about 50 mm in diameter.

Glass carboys can be used as decorative objects. You can fill the inside of a glass carboy with plants in an original way, close it tightly and watch the plant live on.

The origins of Dame Jeanne: Legend has it that, driven from her kingdom of Naples, Queen Jeanne took refuge in her county of Provence in 1347 along the road from Grasse to Draguignan. Surprised by a violent storm, she was given shelter in the small castle of a glassmaker's gentleman in the hamlet of “Saint Paul la Galline Grasse”.
After spending the night there, the queen wished to see the flasks being made. A little perturbed, the glassmaker blew into the bit of his cane, and made a huge bottle that everyone admired for its capacity of around ten liters. He decided to start production and called it Reine-Jeanne, but the sovereign modestly suggested that it be called “Dame Jeanne”. So, to protect this large bottle, the glassmaker dressed it in wicker.

Today, we use the vintage dame jeanne as a decorative vase: empty, with cut flowers or garlands of light inside.

--------- Important note: This is an antique and NOT a NEW item, so it has some minor age-related defects that are hardly visible (e.g. stains on the inside that are difficult to remove).
