-----------A short history of the demijohn: A demijohn, carboy or carboy is a large bottle most often made of glass, sometimes stoneware, protected by moss, straw or woven wicker (the clissage) on the wall. It is used for the conservation and transport of food, drinks and other liquids (alcohols, acids, etc.). Spherical in shape, flattened at the base, they are topped with a neck of approximately 50 mm in diameter.

Glass carboys can be decorative objects. It is therefore possible to fill the inside of a carboy with plants in an original way, to close it tightly and to see the plant live without any problem.

Origin of the demijohn: Legend has it that, chased from her kingdom of Naples, Queen Jeanne came to take refuge in 1347 in her county of Provence by passing by the road from Grasse to Draguignan. Surprised by a violent storm, she was directed to the small castle of the gentleman glassmaker in the hamlet of "Saint Paul la Galline Grasse" as asylum.
After spending the night there, the queen wanted to see the bottles made. A little troubled, the glassmaker blew into the end of his cane, and made an enormous bottle that was admired by all for its capacity of around ten liters. He then decided to start manufacturing it and called it Reine-Jeanne, but the sovereign modestly suggested giving it the name "dame jeanne". So to protect this big bottle, the glassmaker dressed it in wicker.

Today, we use the vintage demijohn as a decorative vase: empty, with cut flowers or fairy lights inside.

--------- Important note: This is an antique object and NOT NEW, which therefore has some small defects of age that are not very visible (For example, stains on the inside that are difficult to remove)
